Week-long nationwide observance kicks off celebrating Transportation Demand Management (TDM)

Transportation organizations, elected leaders, states, and cities among those officially recognizing TDM Week

Washington, DC — From September 16-20, professionals, organizations, and supporters from throughout the country and beyond are celebrating TDM Week, an annual observance that raises awareness about the societal and personal benefits of Transportation Demand Management (TDM). Among them are the State of Oregon, the State of Washington, the State of Pennsylvania, employers, service providers, transit agencies, and more.

This observance, spearheaded by the Association for Commuter Transportation (ACT), aims to uplift TDM’s many benefits of reduced congestion, improved mobility, cleaner air, and enhanced quality of life to decision-makers and key stakeholders. TDM Week participants joined by ‘taking a pledge,’ which committed them to a specific action surrounding communications, policy, and events throughout the week. ACT received a total of 246 pledges, including 146 communications actions, 62 policy actions, and 38 events.

“Through TDM, we can and have reduced carbon emissions in our communities,” said David McMaster, Association for Commuter Transportation Board President. “Whether they are traveling to work, for leisure, or otherwise, everyone deserves access to real transportation options. This week is a time to share the immense value of TDM with those who can make actionable change.”

The theme of this year’s observance is Carbon Reduction, which continues the organization’s long tradition of advocacy surrounding transportation decarbonization. TDM Week is recognized at the local and state level by ACT members, non-members, elected leaders, and other key supporters.

"Transportation Demand Management is essential to ensuring Americans have access to a variety of affordable, efficient, and sustainable transportation options, from buses to bicycling. As the incoming co-chair of the Congressional Bike Caucus, I look forward to advocating for policies that enhance TDM and promote transportation that’s easily accessible and climate-friendly," said Congressman Mike Thompson (CA-04).

“TDM delivers reliable and sustainable transportation options for everyone, improving access to jobs, education, and all the trips in between” said David Straus, Association for Commuter Transportation Executive Director. “The TDM Week movement grows each year, bringing increased awareness of initiatives and strategies that benefit travelers. ACT, alongside this year’s participants, is excited to see one of the biggest TDM Weeks yet.”
