Seaport Ferry Tour (April 29, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m)
Experience the joys of water transit by taking a ride on the Seaport Ferry. While cruising Boston Harbor, hear from the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority and the Seaport Transportation Management Association about how they harnessed the power of public-private partnerships and brought together Seaport companies to consolidate their private shuttles to create a new, traffic-free commuter ferry that is open to the public. Learn how this first-of-its-kind, public-private partnership reduces traffic and emissions, gets employees to work (with a smile), fills in missing transit connections, and helped spark Boston's ferry renaissance. Participants will have ample time for Q&A.
The Seaport Ferry is a year-round commuter ferry that launched in January 2019 with service between North Station and the Seaport. In late 2021, service began between the Seaport and East Boston. This spring, service is expanding again to a brand new dock at Pier 10 in the Seaport, in response to the need for transit service to the rapidly growing Raymond Flynn Marine Park.
Harvard Sustainable Transportation Tour (April 29, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m)
The Harvard Sustainable Transportation Tour will provide a comprehensive look at the university’s future-focused transportation initiatives across Allston and Cambridge. In Allston, participants will visit the Harvard fleet and shuttle headquarters, where discussions will center on Level 3 chargers, electric expansion, safety innovations like sideguards, and sustainable procurement. The tour will highlight upcoming advancements such as electric Zipcars, an e-cargo bike share program, the recycling and reuse center, and the SEC mobility hub featuring innovative bike shelters, redesigned streets prioritizing pedestrians and micromobility, and expanded Bluebike station sponsorships.
Future developments will also include permeable asphalt at the iLab, EV charging facilities, wind turbines at the Soldiers Field Garage, and bridge redesigns to address interagency coordination challenges. In Cambridge, visitors will explore plans for the DeWolfe Bike Corridor, expanded HKS bike shelters, upgraded Powerflex chargers at 52 Oxford, and the malleable Science Center Plaza. Additional stops will focus on roadside bike assistance stations and the Divinity Avenue bike shelter, showcasing Harvard’s ongoing commitment to a sustainable, multimodal transportation future.
MBTA Transit Technology Exploration (April 29, 1 p.m. - 3 p.m.)
Empowering Riders and Front-line Staff. Get a hands-on introduction to how the MBTA is using technology to drive change at the nation’s oldest transit systems. We’ll start with an introduction to the MBTA’s Technology Innovation Department and the modern tools they’re building for riders and front-line staff – from flexible new countdown signs to powerful dispatching interfaces. We’ll then go onto the system to see some of this new tech at work in an MBTA station.
