Understanding and Influencing Traveler Behavior to Make the Most of our Transportation System

Last call pricing kicks in on Wednesday, April 9!

The ACT Midwest Chapter is hosting the first Midwest TDM Summit convening public and private sector planners, engineers, and communications professionals alongside employers and developers to understand how TDM strategies can improve livability of communities in the Midwest while stimulating economic activity and encouraging efficient use of our existing and future transportation infrastructure.

Many public transportation agencies, local governments, businesses, and developers are already doing TDM – whether it’s communicating to the public and local businesses about construction impacts and travel options besides driving, promoting bike and transit commutes to employees, offering hybrid work schedules or telecommuting, building bike storage rooms to attract tenants, requiring developments to consider transportation access, or encouraging residents to try carpooling or transit.

All of these TDM strategies + more help people understand their transportation options and help them reach their destinations easily, affordably and sustainably. Join us to learn more about TDM with sessions focusing on how TDM can benefit your community and be a cost-effective way to meet safety, livability, and economic goals, including panels focusing on how different levels of government can work together, how employers can improve options for commuters, and how developers realize returns on their investments.

Lunch Research Lecture: Measuring Impact of TDM Strategies with Research and Evaluation Dr. Yingling Fan, PhD

Dr. Yingling Fan is a Professor of Urban and Regional Planning and Associate Dean for Faculty at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs, University of Minnesota. Her research focuses on how urban infrastructure and emerging technologies can expand mobility choices and promote sustainable transportation. In this presentation, Dr. Fan will highlight findings from her recent study on parking contract holders in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. She will explore how strategies like flexible parking arrangements and smartphone-based behavioral interventions can motivate people to shift away from driving and adopt more sustainable travel modes.

Dr. Fan is also the founding CEO of Daynamica, a technology startup that develops smartphone applications to collect data on travel behavior and well-being for research institutions and public agencies. She is a pioneer of the transportation happiness concept, and her groundbreaking work linking mobility to quality of life has been featured in major media outlets such as Time Magazine, National Geographic, Bloomberg, Forbes, and The Guardian. Among her signature projects is the Twin Cities Transportation Happiness Map, which uses self-reported emotional experiences to identify the travel routes and modes that bring the most joy to commuters.

Afternoon Discussions – Choose Your Own TDM Adventure

Connect with colleagues to discuss opportunities for TDM in your organization, share challenges to implementation, and learn from peers who have succeeded. Tables will be organized so that attendees with similar roles can sit together. Each table will have a leader to facilitate and case studies of TDM in the Midwest to prompt discussion and share the report out of the discussion. Tables will be organized to support dialogue between similar organizations, including: state governments, cities and counties, MPOs and ATPs, nonprofits (including Transportation Management Organizations), employers, and developers.

Participate in one of four deep-dive discussion groups that will be sure to ignite conversations far beyond the summit.
