NEVI Funding Temporarily Rescinded
The new leadership at the U.S. Department of Transportation has rescinded the current guidance for the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program. In a statement released on February 6, the USDOT states that “the current NEVI Formula Program Guidance...and all prior versions of this guidance are rescinded” and “no new obligations may occur under the NEVI Formula Program until the updated final NEVI Formula Program Guidance is issued and new State plans are submitted and approved”.
USDOT plans to publish new funding guidance in the spring of 2025 which will be open for public comment. In their reevaluation, they plan to center funding around the goals stated in their memo “Ensuring Reliance Upon Sound Economic Analysis in Department of Transportation Policies, Programs, and Activities.” published in late January. Under these directives, funding will be prioritized for projects that utilize user-payer models (such as toll roads), support transportation needs for families (with preference to areas with marriage and birth rates higher than the national average), align with local economic opportunity zones, do not impose vaccine or mask mandates, and comply with immigration enforcement.
