2025-2026 Board spotlight: Russell McDermott

Russell McDermott is a Program Director at AECOM, a Patriot Chapter member, and an incoming At-Large Director on ACT's Board of Directors. Meet Russell and learn more about him in this November board spotlight!

Throughout his sixteen-year career in transportation, Russell McDermott has held various roles, all sharing a common goal: prioritizing the environment and expanding mobility in the communities he serves. From Outreach Coordinator to Program Manager, he has gained diverse experiences within the industry.

Currently, Russell serves as a Program Director in AECOM's Sustainable Mobility Group. He oversees CTrides, the state-wide sustainable and active transportation program, and key aspects of  CTrail, the statewide rail program. In this role, he has collaborated closely with key stakeholders in Connecticut. Through this position, he has honed his skills in creating and managing successful coalitions.

When asked about his motivation, Russell attributes it to several factors. Firstly, the realization that his work in transportation demand management contributes to a better future for generations to come, fueling his passion. Secondly, the competitive nature of the industry, where talented individuals constantly strive for excellence, inspires him. This healthy competition encourages learning and collaboration, ultimately resulting in enhanced services for clients and stakeholders.

Russell has been an active member of ACT for nearly seven years, involved in various aspects of the association. Previously in the SEACT Chapter, he currently belongs to ACT's Patriot Chapter. He also serves on the Certification Board of Directors (CBOT).

One of his fondest memories from his time in ACT is the 35th Annual International Conference held in Walt Disney World, Florida. There, he reconnected with old friends and made new ones while participating in engaging hands-on activities.

Outside of work, Russell enjoys traveling and creating lasting memories with his family. He is also an avid Star Trek fan.

In his upcoming term as an At-Large Director, Russell is excited to contribute to the organization's direction and inspire members to get involved and make a positive impact.

He says, "Building upon the association's achievements, I am eager to collaborate with and learn from the new board members. I look forward to exploring innovative strategies to elevate the association to new heights."
